Rare and Unusual Papua New Guinean Boiken Statue
Rare and Unusual Papua New Guinean Boiken Statue
This rare and unusual Papua New Guinean statue is a male ancestral figure from the Boiken region of the East Sepik Province.
Ancestral figures were thought to embody the spirits of particularly powerful and dangerous clan ancestors.
Markings can be seen on this statue similar to the ritual scarifications made on the bodies of initiated tribal members, while remnants of thread through the nose indicate where piercings may have been attached during tribal ceremonies.
Boiken ancestral figures remain rare and highly collectable in the art world- this particular piece with its large size, well rendered face and finely carved details will be the highlight of any tribal or Oceanic art collection.
In excellent vintage condition.
