This mid to late 19th century figural lady cane or parasol handle, attributed to Meissen, is a wonderfully charming piece.
These cane handles command intense interest in the European and American market, and are rare and desirable pieces. Remarkably few of comparable quality have come to auction in the last decade worldwide. This one is one of the finest pieces we have seen in Australia, and would have been brought over by a well-heeled individual likely around turn of the century.
This piece is unmarked but comparing the fineness of detail in this piece to other marked Meissen cane handles, we are confident in attributing this to Meissen.
Factoring the fineness of features, exquisiteness of the painted lace, delicate floral motifs and rich gilt details, this piece strongly compares against other unmarked pieces of this style and period.
Modeled in a Baroque manner, the ergonomically shaped hand rest is one of Meissen’s favoured silhouettes for this type of figural handle. The figural lady head, veiled with black lace, showcases craftsmanship that was only found among manufacturers on the level of Meissen in 19th century Europe. Complementary floral motifs can be found on the stem, as well as the body of the handle. The body is a brilliant hard-paste porcelain, which again is a signature of Meissen pieces.
Price is marked at $1550 AUD.
Measurements: Approx. 12cm length, 7.5cm high, 1.1 handle interior dia.
Condition: Minor wear to body, some wear to rim commensurate with age. One historic chip to top of head as pictured, which blends into the ash blonde hairstyle.
