A lovely midcentury sterling silver chalice with knopped stem, made in 1972 to commemorate the 900th year of Lincoln Cathedral. It was made by AE Jones & Co., founded by the famous Arts and Crafts silversmith of the same name, and has the Birmingham hallmark for 1972. These goblets were limited worldwide and numbered from 1072 to 1972, with this particular goblet numbered 1791 which is stamped to the base, making it number 791 of this range.
The goblet is modelled after Richard of Gravesend’s chalice, who was Bishop of Lincoln and died in 1279, and the original was found in the Bishop’s grave in Lincoln Cathedral.
One of the most distinguishing features of A. E. Jones’ work is that it incorporates ecclesiastical themes and motifs, which makes the company a particularly suitable choice in recreating this medieval chalice.
