A beautiful pair of Meiji Period Japanese vases that have been converted into lamps, circa late 19th century. Made by Nishiura Enji, who oversaw the Nishiura kiln during the mid to late Meiji Period. The Nishiura kiln, which closed in 1911, was a 5 generation ceramics kiln that specialised in Mino ware. The kiln was awarded prizes during the Paris World Exposition in 1899 as well as a gold award at the Saint Louis World Exposition in 1904.

These have been made in the Kutani style and are beautifully hand-painted with motifs of birds and flowers and beautifully facetted porcelain body. Marked Nishiura Ysukura (Made by Nishiura) to base on both vases.


Price marked at $660 AUD for the pair.

Measurements: 14.5cm diameter at widest point, 35 cm height. Vase height 26cm.

Very good antique condition, some light firing flaws which do not affect use or display.
