One of the best pieces of antique silver we have ever had in the shop. This incredibly rare matched pair of crested George III sterling silver cast candlesticks is by William Cafe, the most important candlestick maker of the period. The two candlesticks are assayed for London, 1761 and 1762 respectively.
Both are crested, engraved on the removable bobèches and scalloped stepped bases respectively. The crest depicts a dexter arm embowed holding in the gauntlet a battle-ax with head to the sinister. Research on the crest remains ongoing but the rich heritage of these candlesticks is evident in their exquisite form.
Price marked at $17,500 AUD for the pair.
Measurements: 27cm high. 1172 grams the pair (unweighted).
Excellent antique condition, marks crisp and well struck. Engraved crests on bobeches worn commensurate with age.
