Pair of antique Satsuma porcelain vases circa Meiji period, mid to late 19th century
A fine pair of antique Satsuma porcelain vases circa Meiji period, approximately mid to late 19th century. Very finely painted scenery of Asiatic pheasants with blooming flowers, depicting classic summer motifs. Richly gilded throughout, which is a signature of Satsuma pottery.
Satsuma pottery is one of Japan’s most distinctive ceramic styles, and first achieved renown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1867. Pottery from that period, as exemplified by these vases, is considered some of the finest produced by Japan and was a foundation of Japanese trade with the West during the Meiji Period.
These matched vases both bear a handpainted backstamp in kanji stating “Satsuma”, with stylised florals around the cartouche in red with gilt details.
