Near Antique Ivory Statue of Mahatma Gandhi c. 1920s-30s
Today we have an unusual piece of ivory; this near antique statue of Mahatma Gandhi circa 1920s-30s is an amazing piece to behold. Gandhi adopted this simple way of dress, a cotton or linen dhoti, on 21 September 1921. This powerful symbolic gesture not only immediately showed his sympathy with India’s rural poor. His wearing of India’s self-produced fabric, khadi, was also a declaration of India’s independence and self-sufficiency at a time when many chose to wear foreign imported cloth. A poignant statue full of meaning, this piece is fixed to a custom stand.
