Midcentury Chinese natural carved coral Shoulao figurine, substantial size
Midcentury Chinese natural carved coral Shoulao figurine, substantial size
Lovely 20th century Chinese carved coral figurine depicting Shoulao, one of the Eight Immortals and the god of Longevity. Here he is smiling and depicted with several of his signature characteristics. A high forehead, his right hand holding his staff, and peaches from the tree of immortality are all characteristics of this deity.
A lovely and auspicious piece, this is a well carved and substantial piece which takes advantage of the coral’s natural form. We believe this is likely circa 1950s-70s.
Colors are vivid; as per G.I.A. recommendations we have performed the acetone test on this piece and there is zero dye bleed, an excellent sign that this piece is a naturally desirable orange-red. Some natural inclusions but parallel striations are evident which is indicative of coral.
