This rare pot lid is titled “Peace” and “Peace”, signed by master engraver Jesse Austin, the scene after a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. in 1846. This painting and its companion piece “War” were subsequently lost following the flooding of the Tate Galleries in 1928. Catalogued as No. 220 in Ball’s A.C.C. Price Guide and circa 1860-70s, this is a quintessential example of Victorian Prattware.

The lettering and graphics applied to these paste pots provide lovely examples of Victorian utilitarianism and insight into 19th century daily life, as well as people’s needs and aspirations at the time. These showcase both the beauty and function inherent in many such wares during Victorian times.

Price marked at $330AUD.

Dimensions: Pot lid diameter approx 9cm.

Condition: Light crazing as pictured, as well as overall light wear commensurate with age. One fleabite and one minor chip to rim as pictured. Old provenance label to interior. Still very good for display.
