Mid to late 19th century Thai sterling silver offering tray, with Chinese chopmarks indicating the maker/retailer’s mark of Pan Hong Xing and Zu Yin which represents .925 to .950 silver purity.
From the 1850s to 1920s, many silversmiths were located in Bangkok where they produced items often of superb quality. This tray is one such piece, and would likely have been used in a temple or household shrine for food offerings. The maker’s marks, while slightly rubbed, likely 潘烘星, which would be the firm/atelier mark of Pan Hong Xing, almost certainly an ethnic Chinese silversmith.
A beautiful and substantial piece with excellent repousse work and etched designs throughout, as well as a lightly planished surface, including Buddha figures depicted in the Thai manner. The heart shaped cartouches to each side are an additional charming detail.
Price marked at $8000 AUD,
Measurements: 36.5cm length, 25.5cm across. 773 grams.
Excellent antique condition. Substantial with thick gauge and designs are crisp. Marks slightly rubbed but legible.
