This beautiful hand-raised 1950s to 1970s sterling silver bowl is a beautiful example of midcentury American craftsmanship by one of the finest makers in the 20th century William L. DeMatteo. DeMatteo (1923 to 1988). Son of master silversmith William G. Matteo, he was a master craftsman in his own right and would become the first master silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg; this bowl would have been produced during his tenure there as head of the James Geddy Silversmith's Shop. In 1975 he would become the first American silversmith inducted into the Goldsmiths’ Company in London.
His pieces were commissioned and presented to luminaries such as Sir Winston Churchill, Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Jimmy Carter, and numerous visiting foreign heads of state. “Bill” DeMatteo also reproduced the famous Paul Revere lanterns to hang in the Oval Office.
His pieces remain highly prized today as a piece of American history. With its thick gauge, hand-raised details and beautifully turned rim, this will be a future heirloom piece for any silver collector.
Price marked at $1500 AUD.
