Mid-19th century Steel Engraving by Henry Winkles of Three Asian Countries
This mid-19th century steel engraving is by noted illustrator, engraver and printer Henry Winkles (1801-1860). He worked with several authors, with this particular engraving being from G. Heck’s Iconographic Encyclopaedia of Science, Literature, and Art, which was published by R. Garrigue in 1852. Together with Karl Ludwig Frommel, he founded the first studio for steel engraving in Germany. Depicting the cultures of various countries such as India, China and Japan, this is an intriguing and beautiful piece of history showing Western perspectives at the time.
