A lovely framed mid to late Victorian pot lid that will appeal to Prattware and literature enthusiasts alike, carefully mounted in its original timber frame. Titled “I Consent, She Replied, If You Promise That No Jealous Rival Shall Laugh Me To Scorn”. This is taken from a popular song based on The Thorn by John O’Keeffe. Circa 1850-60s, this is often referred by collectors as “The First Appeal” and is a sought after quintessential example of Victorian Prattware.

Charmingly, the original paper label advertising the superior merits of Burgess and Sons’ Anchovy Paste can be seen on the pot lid’s reverse. The lettering and graphics applied to these paste pots provide lovely examples of Victorian utilitarianism and insight into 19th century daily life, as well as people’s needs and aspirations at the time. These showcase both the beauty and function inherent in many such wares during Victorian times..

Price marked at $320AUD.
