Soft, luminous colours, lovely gilt inner borders and densely packed patterns- this is an excellent example of a Cantonese rose medallion plate.
Known in Chinese as 粉彩, these translucent enamels are rendered in pastel shades and were carefully applied by hand. Made in Canton for the export market, they were produced in varying stages of fineness between the 18th and 20th centuries.
Early pieces such as this one show a remarkable delicacy; this one is lavishly decorated with courtly figures against intricate backgrounds, as well as ruyi-shaped patterns as well as birds, peonies and a pattern of floral and fauna. This is also a relatively larger plate compared to the usual display plate sizes typical of rose medallion ware.
Price marked at AU$220.
Measurements: 20.5cm diameter, 2cm height.
Overall fair antique condition with wear as pictured commensurate with age as well as slight fade to glaze. Small fleabite chips to rim as well as a stable hairline crack to base. Still a beautiful piece with historic value that will only increase with time.
