A very charming late 19th century to early 20th century brass betel nut box, likely from the Malay Archipelago or Burma (Myanmar). The three compartments would be for betel nuts, lime and tobacco or aromatic spices. For instance, cardamom, cloves, anise or ginger might be pinched and mixed as users desired to achieve a sense of euphoria and lightness. Slaked lime, which lines the left compartment, was chewed together with the nut to improve absorption.

Price marked at $400 AUD

Measurements: 9.5cm by 5.5, 4cm height.

Good antique condition. Lime traces in one comportment as well as wear to box commensurate with age and use. In our opinion this adds to the charm of this piece and is part of its history.
