Today we have a finely crafted Meiji Period Japanese bronze and champlevé censer. Champlevé is a cousin to cloisonne but of an even more painstaking nature. This Japanese kōro or censer from the Meiji era (1868–1912) is of unusual size and fineness, with an elephant motif rather than the usual dragon or foo dog finial.
The bronze is a beautiful rich patina, finely chiselled with Japanese motifs, and a central band worked in polychrome champlevé (a few gaps and bubbles) with floral motifs and traditional colours. The lid features a lovely openwork pierced design, with a pattern suggestive of traditional cloud motifs. With a classic square body and quad-footed base, this is a timelessly stunning and highly collectible piece. .
