Late 19th Century Doulton Burslem Spanishware Cabinet Dish

Lovely late 19th century Doulton Burslem Spanishware cabinet plate with marks dating this to 1886-1890. Beautiful scalloped edge with arabesque flourishes and gilt accents to rim and flowers. 

This type of ware was developed by John Slater, Doulton Burslem’s first art director. John Slater needs little introduction; at the Nile St works, he gathered great artists such as Charles Noke, cementing Doulton Burslem’s reputation. It was considered an innovative and unusual decoration for the time, and was highly popular in Victorian England from the early 1880’s into the early 1900’s. “Spanish Ware” has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book “The Doulton Burslem Wares” as “featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground”.  A similar piece is in the John Slater collection, which now resides in the Powerhouse Museum.

This is an excellent example of Spanish ware with an unusual pastel thistle motif.

Measurements: approx 23cm diameter.

Condition: Some light rubbing to gilt around rim. Slight wear and faint marks commensurate with age. Overall very good antique condition otherwise.
