A charming late 19th century Continental European jewellery casket with pietra dura inlay and original silk lining. The body of the box is made from white metal, possibly unmarked low-grade silver.
Pietra Dura, which refers to the lapidary art of carving hardstone such as marble into various inlays, was popular from Roman times up to the Edwardian period. From the 1700s to 1900s, pietra dura was often one of the techniques used to create Grand Tour souvenirs in varying degrees of fineness.
