Large Japanese Meiji Period Ivory Figurine of Farmer with Chickens signed by Ryujin
*Note that ivory items will only be shipped to domestic Australian addresses.
One of the finest ivory pieces we have come across in terms of craftsmanship.
Here we have a farmer cradling a chick in his arms with a rooster by his feet. His cap, outfit, accessories and sash are all individually coloured. Lovely expressiveness particularly to the facial features and to the animal depictions as well as beautifully done colours. Details have been picked out in different shades with superb attention paid.
Signed by Ryujin (龍津) in red lacquer on the base. Ryujin was an ivory sculptor active during the Meiji period (19th century); not much is known about the artist but his features tend to be extremely well done and intricately detailed. Not many pieces of his come up for sale, making him a particularly rare and collectible ivory sculptor. Comes with its custom stand.
Price marked at $3500 AUD. Excellent antique condition with only slight wear commensurate with age.
