Large Antique Ivory Chinese Dragon Figurine Carved from Tusk
Large Antique Ivory Chinese Dragon Figurine Carved from Tusk
Carved from a single tusk, this figurine is carved from a single piece of ivory in the shape of a dragon with well depicted face and three clawed toes. Its tongue can be removed for cleaning, which allows one to see the interior of the tusk. The dragon is intricately carved with whiskers, scales and even delicate ruyi-shaped clouds.
Its custom timber stand creates the illusion of the dragon soaring into the sky, which brings to mind the Chinese idiom 二龙腾飞- two dragons soar into the sky, which is used to describe speedy success and implies a blessing as such.
Circa late 19th century, early 20th century, this piece is in excellent antique condition.
