"La Bouteille" by Laurent Schkolnyk, Vintage Mezzotint
Laurent Schkolnyk (Paris, 1953-) is one of the great contemporary masters of the mezzotint medium.
Traditional mezzotints are black and white and rely on the preparation of a single plate; Schkolnyk creates his pieces using three separate plates to convey richness and depth of colour. Since the 1980s most of his solo exhibitions have been in France and Japan. His works appear in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. This particular print titled “La Bouteille” is from his series in 1999, and was edition 23 from a limited run of 90. It portrays excellent colour balance, with the cherries, a Schkolnyk signature, as a pop of colour against the cobalt hues.
