A rare piece of Georgian memorabilia, here we have a framed Georgian estate document circa 1800 concerning the settlement of William Gray’s affairs.

A local of Brafferton, he was likely linked to the Gray family branch in Brafferton as well as surrounding counties in Yorkshire. While few historical records survive, records indicate that several William Grays descended from an eponymous ancestor who died circa 1793, making this a possible family connexion.

His estate was valued at £100 in 1800, with the sum being settled in that same year. A labourer’s annual wages was £12; placing this in perspective, £100 was no small sum, and adjusting for inflation would be well over £10,000 pounds in today’s economy. Gray was likely a man of some means in his local county, possibly a clerk or someone with learning. Another source indicates that this sum would be able to purchase either 9 horses, 111 stones of wool or represent nearly 2 years of a skilled tradesman’s wages.

A fascinating piece of history, perfect for scholars of this time period as well as collectors of ephemera.

Price marked at $250 AUD.
