The dimensionality and depth of detail in this Meiji Period Japanese carved ivory box has to be seen to be believed. Daisies, peonies, chrysanthemums and more bloom across the surface of this lidded box, with a dainty rose finial to the top. The layers in this piece make this one of the most exceptional pieces of antique ivory we have come across in a while. The carved insect and peach motifs to the underside of the lid and to the base indicate this was likely produced in a workshop where Shibayama inlay was also produced, making this likely produced in Tokyo circa late 19th century. An exquisite and timeless piece.

Very good antique condition overall; one split near the base as pictured internally and externally. Due to profusion of floral motifs, this crack is not too overt. Still good for use and display.
