A large and well-executed early 20th century Chinese porcelain basin with rose medallion enamels. Particularly good artistic motifs with varying panels of flowers, birds and gilt accents. Featuring richly coloured iron red glaze backgrounds in the two central panel household scenes, which unusually depict male and female musicians with their attendants. The male is playing pai xiao or pan flutes, while the woman is playing a flute.
A mark with TS to the base, and a caption that states “Hand painted decoration Made in China”- this type of mark was common in the early to mid 20th century, and it is likely that this piece was produced in or near Guangzhou, I.e. the port of Canton where much of 19th to 20th century famille rose type porcelain was made.
Known in Chinese as fencai 粉彩, these translucent enamels are rendered in pastel shades and were carefully applied by hand. Made in Canton for the export market, they were produced in varying stages of fineness between the 18th and 20th centuries.
Price marked at AUD$750.
Measurements: 33cm opening diameter, 10cm height
Condition: Good vintage to near antique condition, with light wear to gilt and glaze commensurate with age. Light wear to base commensurate with age.
