An exquisite late 19th century set of sterling silver and gilt shell-form salt cellars with salt spoons by renowned maker Alexander Macrae in original case. Marks for London, 1869.
Alexander Macrae was a British silversmith active in the late 19th century who worked on his own as well as with other important artisans. His finely decorated pieces were highly desirable among the upper classes and are some of the most desirable pieces of fine English silver form this period. Macrae not only formed a partnership later with Martin Goldstein, another renowned maker, but also supplied Elkington, Hunt & Roskell and many other notable firms.
This set exemplifies his work, with the shell-form salt cellars beautifully worked with triple porpoise feet, as well as matching salt spoons with enscalloped stem. The gilt interiors of the salt cellars are in excellent condition, while the spoon bowls are entirely gilt-washed. Dated to 1869, these pieces date to the year before he entered into a partnership with Goldstein, making this a fine example of his earlier solo work.
The case is original and indicates that this set was retailed by F. Stubbs, a Loughboro jeweller who was active in that time period and who retailed fine watches as well.

Excellent antique condition overall. Hallmarks crisp and well-struck. The silver is of thick gauge and in antique mint condition. Case also in very good antique condition asides missing velvet to one spoon strap.
