Mid 20th Century Canton Export Rose Medallion Plate

Soft, luminous colours, lovely gilt inner borders and densely packed patterns- this is an excellent example of a midcentury Cantonese rose medallion plate circa 1950s to 1960s.

Known in Chinese as 粉彩, these translucent enamels are rendered in pastel shades and were carefully applied by hand. Made in Canton for the export market, they were produced in varying stages of fineness between the 18th and 20th centuries.

This plate is lavishly decorated with courtly figures, as well as birds, peonies and a pattern of floral and fauna. This is also a relatively larger plate compared to the usual display plate sizes typical of rose medallion ware.

Measurements: 27cm diameter, 3cm height. Red handpainted apocryphal Qianlong reign mark to base.

Overall very good vintage condition with light wear to gilt as pictured commensurate with age.
