Exquisite late Victorian to Edwardian period Anglo-Indian Calcutta silver christening cup by renowned silversmith Grish Chunder Dutt. High silver purity, likely sterling.

Grish Chunder Dutt is considered along with his contemporary Hamilton & Co. to be the finest silversmith in Calcutta. Active from 1872 to 1947, the firm was based in Bhowanipore, Calcutta, and produced fine silverware for the upper echelons of British and Indian society.

Their clients included the Baron Chelmsford (Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1916 to 1921), the Earl of Elgin and the maharajas of Cooch Behar, Jammu and Kashmir; one of their bowls was also presented to the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1893 by the Governor of Bengal.

This mug is an excellent example of their work with intricate repousse motifs, a signature of antique Calcutta silver, as well as gilt-washed interior. A beautiful and practical objet d’art.

Price marked at $500 AUD.

Measurements: 127 grams.

Excellent antique condition, some wear to maker’s mark but still legible.
