Here we have a fascinating framed vintage Japanese Sumo grand wrestling ranking list or banzuke circa 1994 by the Japanese Sumo Association. Featuring two of the top sumo wrestlers from that period, Kirishima Kazuhiro and Hawaiian born rishiki Musashimaru Koyo. The latter is the second foreign rishiki in history to reach the revered top rank of Yokozuna, and 1994 was the first year he reached the second highest ozeki rank.
Until 1909, ozeki was the highest rank achievable, with Yokozuna prior being a title awarded to those in pre-Meiji eras who had performed before the shogun. Until 2021, only 73 wrestlers have reached the ultimate Yokozuna rank.
The bulletin, which states its date to 5th year of the Heisei Period (1994), is also a lovely example of 90s Japanese graphic design with its bold design and smart layout. The calligraphic font used dates to the Edo period, and is called sumo mojo a typography was formed for these bulletins which requires great skill.
This would make a great statement piece for someone interested in Japanese culture, sports, or art enthusiasts looking for something unique.
Price marked at $500AUD.
