"Coogee Headland", 1990s. Superb Oil on Board Painting by Listed Australian Artist Robert Bosler.

This exceptional oil on board painting is titled “Coogee Headland”, and is by noted Australian artist Robert Bosler circa mid to late 1990s. A vibrant, extremely well-executed piece; this is from the period when Mr. Bosler had his studio located in Glebe and began making a name for himself in the Sydney art scene. Nowadays his pieces sell for up to $25,000 AUD.

We have reached out to the artist and Mr. Bosler has said that from recollection, this painting would be of “the southern headland accessed from one of those narrow roads coming down the built hillside. I was in Glebe from around 1994. Being hopeless in remembering names and dates, I can't say exactly what year, but it wouldn't have been more than a couple of years after '94”.

From private correspondence with the artist, here are his following remarks on the luminous colours of his work:
The luminosity is obtained by creating various effects of light, reflecting back in a complex (that occurs naturally if you know the techniques) arrangement of surfaces within the paint structure. I've written books on these techniques, used by, e.g. JMW Turner, which were simply not taught otherwise and less so today; and have created art courses explaining the process. The paintings take many months to create, in larger and complex works can take over a year. The effect is similar in looking at a slide with light behind it, compared with a photograph with light bouncing off it. The former is far more luminous; of course, the painting with up to forty layers (or many more, sometimes fewer) has various surface levels through which the light emanates (as though many slides were on top of each other), making it a rare effect.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. We have rematted the painting, carefully conserving the original frame which was made by the artist using a gold leaf technique. Colours are still rich and vibrant.
