Herbert John Louis Hinkler AFC, DSM (1892 – 1933), better known as Bert Hinkler, was a pioneer Australian aviator (dubbed "Australian Lone Eagle" and inventor. He designed and built early aircraft before being the first person to fly solo from England to Australia, completed on 22 February 1928, and the first person to fly solo across the Southern Atlantic Ocean. This particular medal, struck by Bradford for the Numismatic Society of Australia, commemorates his famous London to Darwin flight.

He had travelled around 18,000km since taking off from Croydon, England, just over 15 days earlier, making history as the first person to fly solo from the UK to Australia. Encountering difficulties during his journey, he overcame numerous difficulties with improvisation and skill, such as fixing fuel leaks with soap, water and an improvised plug all in mid-air.

It was also the longest solo flight yet recorded at that time, and, on completing the record-breaking journey, Bert became a national hero. He captured the public’s imagination and became a national hero, particularly in his hometown of Bundaberg.
