Antique Venetian Cornaline d'Aleppo or “Red Skunk” Bead Earrings with Sterling Silver Settings

Today we are delighted to offer you something rare and intriguing from our new range of jewellery; Venetian trade beads circa the 1800s to 1900s with bespoke settings by our artisans in Java. 

From the 1500s onwards, Venice became the leading bead manufacturer in the world. During this time, their beads were exported as far away as Africa and Asia, where they were treasured as heirlooms, dowry goods and currency in their own right. 

This pair of earrings offers a contemporary take on what is known in the trade as Cornaline d'Aleppo or “Red Skunk” beads. Likely Venetian but sourced in Java, these beads dangle charmingly from articulated sterling silver snake chains. They would be perfect for adding a pop of colour to any outfit, not to mention a dash of antique charm. 

They are set in sterling silver, including two modern spacer beads which help protect the bead’s integrity, and feature hallmarked butterfly posts.

Measurements: These beads are ovoid in form and approximately measure 1.3 by 1.2cm. Total length incl. drop approx. 6cm.
Good antique condition. Patina and fleabites to glass commensurate with age, but bead integrity otherwise very good.
