A beautiful antique Japanese ivory netsuke depicting an old man, possibly a monk, carrying a shishi on his back. Signed 秀之 (Hideyuki) to the side circa late Meiji Period (1868-1912), a well-sculpted piece with small details such as a hand-fan in the old man’s grasp and stitches to his knees.

Shishi are mythical lion-dog beasts believed to ward off evil spirits in Japanese mythology, and can be seen in various forms particularly guarding shrines and temples.
