This remarkable antique Japanese ivory netsuke is signed by Yushin (玉心). Koyosai Yushin was active in the late Edo to early Meiji period; a more elaborate custom piece is in the Victoria Museum and is dated to 1860, which indicates he was already a well known ivory artist at that point in time. Little information was found on this carver but considering the quality of craftsmanship, the time period and the centralisation of activity in Edo/Tokyo at the time, it is highly likely that Yushin was part of the early Tokyo School of ivory netsuke carvers.
Done in the “Karako” style, 3 Chinese scholars can be seen gathered in discussion. Beautifully depicted features and fine colours cement this as a rare, beautiful and desirable piece.
Price marked at $1850AUD.
Base measurements: 2 by 4cm, 4.2cm high.
Good antique condition commensurate with age; area of wear to base.
