This remarkable antique Japanese ivory netsuke is signed by Yamaguchi. Little information was found on this carver but considering the quality of craftsmanship, the likely time period of early to mid Meiji period and the centralisation of activity in Edo/Tokyo at the time, it is highly likely that he was part of the early Tokyo School of ivory netsuke carvers.
Done in the “Karako” style, an old man and child can be seen gathering peaches. Beautifully depicted features and fine colours cement this as a well-carved piece. The peach, child and old man's appearance suggest this could have been intended to depict Shoulao, one of the Chinese Eight Immortals.
Price marked at $1250AUD.
Base measurements: 4cm wide by 4.5cm high, 2.5cm deep.
Excellent antique condition, slight wear commensurate with age.
