This fascinating Meiji period ivory netsuke is highly unusual in style and depiction. The figure is holding rods, possibly drumsticks, and is holding them as he is about to begin a performance or ritual of some sort.

His costume suggests he is wearing some sort of shaped armour, from the fine etchings on it and judging from the shoulder pauldrons, most likely samurai armour.

Signed by Tamayama, an artist active during the Meiji Period. We believe this to be from the late 19th century.

Dimensions: 5 x6 cm, approx width (hard to measure due to flared shape of pauldrons) and total height from base to tip of rod.

Very good antique condition with only mild signs of wear commensurate with age.
