Elegantly made George III sterling silver spoon with London assay marks for Hester Bateman, circa 1771 to 1782. While the year mark is rubbed, the spoon bears Hester Bateman’s early mark circa 1771 to 1782.
Hester Bateman is arguably the most famous female British silversmith of all time, and was well respected in her time. She was active from the 1760s to 1790; upon her retirement, the Bateman family remained a notable silversmithing family for many generations.
