An exquisite set comprising of a sterling silver vesta case and cigarette holder, vesta case with marks for Birmingham, 1903, Charles Lyster & Son. Cigarette holder with marks for Rowlands and Frazer, Birmingham, 1903. In original New Zealand Nordenfeldt retailer’s case circa early 20th century.

The retailer’s case, which is inscribed “Sterling Silver Nordenfeldt Hallmarked Mounts”, is likely a reference to the Nordenfeldt silver mine (formerly known as the Clunes Mines) in Tararu, New Zealand, which was largely operated by individual miners in the 1890s to 1900s as well as the Nordenfeldt syndicate from 1890-1894, and further prospecting  done in the area was reported in 1908. Significantly, this was the first discovery of native silver in New Zealand.

The vesta case is finely made, with profuse engraving throughout and monogrammed initials “J.W.” of the period. The interior is richly gilded, with hallmarks to lid and case. The cheroot holder is beautifully made with an amber body and hallmarked sterling silver tip.
