This lovely English sterling silver match holder / ashtray was an elegant solution to the gentleman pipe-smoker’s quandary; the weighted base meant that the matches could be directly struck to light his pipe, while tapping the ashes out from the pipe would not overtly jolt.
Marks for Birmingham, sterling silver and 1913 Maker’s marks for William Devenport, a silver making company that was active from 1893 to 1948; these particular marks establish that this was when the company was in its Northwood Street premises in Birmingham around the turn of the century,
With a simple border and engine turned details to the match holding compartment, this would make an elegant smoker’s accompaniment or even a modern candle holder.
Price marked at AUD$350.
Measurements : 12cm base dia., approx. 8cm high. 136 grams.
Condition: Very good antique condition with light wear and superficial dents commensurate with age.
