Antique Chinese late Ming to early Qing scholar-official gilt bronze statue

This late Ming to early Qing scholar-official bronze statue is a rare piece to behold in this part of the world. We have had this examined by Peter Combs, a well known expert in the field of Asian art and antiques, and our description is based in part upon his analysis (part of the recording is available on our website for viewing). Here depicted in robes and headdress while holding a prayer or ritual stick, the figure is seen sitting on a raised rectangular plinth. The scholar-official could be one of several historical figures that became Daoist deities, such as Liu Bei, Wenchang Wang (文昌王) etc. This statue is therefore likely to be circa 16th century. 

What is particularly rare is that the gilt appears to be completely original and in good condition for a piece of this age. There is a crack to the back of the base, which is very common with this type of status and could either be damage from being dropped or a firing crack (see similar statue that sold through Doyle’s in 2014). The base was possibly re-lacquered sometime in the 18-19th century, but this should be considered part of the item’s history.

Height of 9 and 1/8 inches high, Base measurements: 4 3/4 inches by 3 3/8 inches.

Height of 23.2cm, base measurements 12cm by 8.7cm.

Condition: Overall very good antique condition with details in description. No damage to features or head, one crack to back in base. Some wear to gilt overall particularly to shoulders, please see pictures for more detail.
