Antique Chinese Export Silver Swing-Handled Basket with Pierced Seasonal and Floral Motifs
Antique Chinese Export Silver Swing-Handled Basket with Pierced Seasonal and Floral Motifs
Produced sometime in the late 19th to early 20th century, likely 1880 to 1920, this antique Chinese export silver swing-handled basket is a lovely piece to behold.
Great hand-hammered details, including a highly planished finish with exquisitely dimpled background. Contrasts beautifully with the repousse designs of the 4 interior panels, which have also been carefully pierced to showcase the floral motifs.
The bamboo, prunus, chrysanthemum and orchid designs have traditionally symbolised the 4 seasons; they are also known as the Four Noble Ones due to the homonym of the Chinese characters.
A piece which showcases traditional Chinese aesthetics in a classic Western form; a great example of Chinese export silver. Stamped ‘Silver” to the base.
Price marked at $1750 AUD.
Measurements: 27 by 16 cm base measurements, 6cm high. 346grams.
Very good antique condition. Light wear commensurate with age and use.
