Beautiful antique bronze circa 1921 depicting Achilles, the famous Greek hero and leader of the Myrmidons in Homer’s epic poem the Iliad, by noted sculptor Fredrich Gornik. Gornik (1877-1943) was an Austrian sculptor whose patrons included Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. He was an accomplished artist, having studied with Theodor Charlemont in Vienna then at the Vienna School of Applied Arts.

He would later go on to exhibit at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Friedrich Gornik's 'Troika' was purchased by Emperor Franz Joseph I

Here Achilles is depicted in a Myrmidon helmet, in the act of having just thrown his spear. His sword, hanging from his left hip, remains sheathed and his shield is held on his left arm. Here we see the great hero well-depicted as a powerful warrior in a dynamic pose, with well-sculpted features.
