Here we have a rare and superb antique medical blood transfusion pump, circa 1890s, made by J.H. Montagu of Bond Street, London. This firm was active from 1896 to 1920 and was highly regarded for their medical instruments, and this particular blood transfusion pump is of superb quality made to great precision with its body made from gleaming brass and featuring elegant ivory handle.
The first human blood transfusion in history took place on September 26, 1818, at 2:00-3:00 pm and was performed by Dr. James Blundell. During the 19th century, these operations primarily were used for women suffering severe hemorrhages during childbirth; although the mechanics of blood transfusions were not fully understood until 1901 when Dr. Karl Landsteiner discovered blood types, it was understood in the 19th century that in a situation of life and death, blood transfusions were a life-saving straw for patients.
Medical equipment from this period is extremely rare, with most pieces currently in museum collections. A stunning, highly collectible piece.
