A rare and lovely early Japanese export trade ivory carving, circa late 19th century (1860s to 1880s). This tableau was carved from a single piece of ivory in the round, likely from the solid base section of the tusk, and the tusk itself would have been of substantial size. A beautiful river scene with the base carved to resemble waves, and in the background a pavilion with figures within. To the foreground we see rocks, figures conversing on a bridge, a delicately sculpted tree and fishermen on a boat.

Unsigned but clearly made by a master craftsman, the intricacy of this piece is a true testament to skill. This likely made its way to the West via the treaty port of Nagasaki during the late 19th century, and is an enduring testament to craftsmanship and skill.

Comes with its original stand.

Price marked at $1900 AUD.

Measurements: Tableau length of 7cm, Base measurements of stand are 8 by 5.5cm. Total height including stand approx. 6cm.

Excellent antique condition overall. Very light wear and minor yellowing overall.
