A stunning 19th century lacquer and ivory Chinese export folding chessboard and backgammon gaming box with original pieces. The gaming box’s exterior is a beautifully handpainted chessboard with heavy gilt detailing, and when opened the interior is a backgammon board. This was likely produced in Canton circa 1860 to 1880s.
The gaming pieces are beautifully carved with a beautiful interpretation of the king, queen and other pieces, such as the castles being elephant palanquins.
All pieces are present but some small parts (such as hat finials and the sabres held by the pawns) have been sympathetically replaced over the years by previous owners.
Price marked at $2000 AUD.
Box dimensions (closed): 56 by 28cm, 9cm high.
Very good antique condition overall,, with some parts replaced as per description. Small stable splits to wood around hinges as pictured as well as minor damage to corners. Some wear to gilt and rubbing to corners commensurate with age and use.
