Antique early to mid 19th century Jadeite snuff bottle. The central motif of a celestial dragon is usually depicted with a paw in the foreground; the sculptor was clearly of surpassing skill as the motif takes advantage of the stone’s natural form. This pebble-form highlights the natural contours of the jade, with the deep contours indicating this could well be the Suzhou school of agate and jade art. Suzhou jade was prized for centuries, particularly by Emperor Qianlong.
The spinach jade stopper forms a beautiful contrast to the main body’s colour, which is of excellent colouration of the lavender jade variety.
Price marked at AUD$1800.
Height of 7 cm, width approx 5cm.
Excellent antique condition. Spoon intact, albeit wear consistent with age.
