19th C. Meiji period Bronze Hand Mirror with Inscription

This lovely Japanese bronze hand mirror from the Meiji period would make a fantastic display piece. 

During the 19th century, mirrors were prized and expensive objects in Japan. The mirror of goddess Amaterasu is one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, and they were prized for artistic, cultural and even religious reasons. 

This particular mirror comes with its original lacquerware box. 

Intricately detailed, the bronze back depicts a riverside or reed-filled lake scene with water birds, possibly herons, and turtles. In particularly the turtle has great importance in Chinese and Japanese mythology; here it can be seen with almost dragon-like clawed feet and a cloud-like pattern on its shell.

The maker’s inscription can also be seen on the left side of the mirror’s back. 

This piece is in fair antique condition; made from patinated bronze, the piece certainly shows age and has developed a stronger patina over time; we have left this up to discretion of the buyer to keep as is or remove. The mirrored glass has also tarnished over time. No other major issues. The lacquerware box shows signs of wear, particularly to edges and to the top of the box.
