Founded in 1873 at Launceston, John McHugh began his pottery business which would thrive and become one of Tasmania’s biggest names.
Nowadays McHugh’s wares from the mid 1920s to 1930s, produced during the heyday of the Australian Art Deco period, are extremely collectible.
This lovely large blue and yellow vase circa 1935is an excellent example of several desirable characteristics in McHugh pottery; distinct and unfaded drip glazes as well as collectible blue and yellow Art Deco primary colours. This colour way is more rare than the usual brown and/or yellow glazes that were typically used.
It should be noted that 1920s-30s pieces are particularly desirable as production of decorative wares was suspended during WWII and never resumed thereafter, making McHugh Art Deco pieces ever more collectible.
Price marked at $600AUD.
Measurements: 19cm diameter at widest point.
Condition: One chip to base as pictured Incised signature clear; date mark 1935.
