A beautiful High Victorian gilt and sterling silver travelling communion set with marks (on chalice and plate) for London, 1853. John Keith. A maker of church plate, Keith was active from 1850 to 1862. comprising a small wine decanter, chalice and communion bread plate. Beautiful engraved details throughout, particularly to the goblet and communion dish.
To the base of the communion dish there is a charming inscription in script of the period “Presented by the Parishioners of Llansantffraid to the Reverend Thomas Rowland, Christmas, 1854”. Llansantffraid Parish Church remains part of the Church of Wales and its building was given Grade 11* historical status.
Engraved to the front on chalice and plate is the monogram IHS, which stands for Iota, Eta, Sigma, the original Greek letters symbolising Jesus.
Price marked at $2500 AUD.
Measurements: 9.5cm height (goblet), 6.5cm width (plate), 2cm plate height. 100.26 grams weight (plate and goblet). Decanter unmarked but tests as sterling silver to collar and cap, height is 10.5. Pontil mark to base of decanter.
Very good antique condition with light wear commensurate with age. Marks crisp and well-struck.
