A beautiful Victorian sterling silver posy holder with marks for London, 1893, John Newton Mappin. Beautifully crafted with profuse repousse work to body, stylised mythical beasts to base of each feet.
J.N. Mappin, the youngest of the Mappin Brothers, broke away from the family company in 1859 to begin his own silversmithing business; this would later be known as Mappin & Webb upon the partnership with his brother in law George Webb. Although Mappin, Webb & Co. was a short-lived partnership due to George’s untimely death in 1864, the name would live on. Mappin & Webb would later acquire the Mappin Brothers firm in 1902, putting an end to a family feud that had persisted over half a century.
Price marked at $800 AUD.
Measurements: 14cm height, 6cm opening diameter. 240.5 grams (heavily weighted base).
Very good antique condition, with light wear overall commensurate with age.
