Vintage George VI sterling silver hunting trophy, Londonderry Garrison Drag Hunt of 1939

Here we have a remarkable vintage English George VI sterling silver hunting trophy with Bakelite base and marks for Birmingham 1938, William Neale & Son, from the Londonderry Garrison Drag Hunt of 1939. This trophy was presented to the winner of the Point to Point Race in the Lightweight category. At this time Neale & Son were still at their premises on Warstone Lane, Birmingham; after the war they would resume operation on Cox Street, St Paul’s, Birmingham.

The Londonderry Garrison Drag Hunt was an officer’s event and was one of the highlights of the season in Ulster during this period. Hounds would track an artificially laid scent to keep officers’ riding skills sharp and their cavalry horses fit.

Due to the outbreak of World War II this would be the very last Garrison Drag Hunt held in Londonderry, and indeed one of the last in the British Empire’s twilight.

Beautifully made with beaded detail to rim, as well as lion-headed ring handles to each side.
